About

A lifetime of connecting people and technology

In November 1977, I wrote and launched a Bulletin Board System called Access-80. It ran on a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I, Level II microcomputer. At the time, only a handful of computer systems were publicly accessible anywhere in the world.

Access-80 gave local computer enthusiasts personal messaging. It first went online in Rensellaer New York. Within a few years it was also online via a friend of mine in Schenectady, New York. When I moved to Nashua, New Hampshire, in 1982, Access-80 moved with me. Before long, my software was also running via another friend of mine in Londonderry, New Hampshire.

The Access-80 systems remained online until during 1987. You can see my original Nashua setup at Access-80.com.

In June 1998, I founded CharlesWorks. It grew from providing low-speed Internet connectivity for personal and nonprofit websites into a full-service website company. Today, our team helps businesses, organizations, and individuals build and maintain a reliable presence online.

We maintain our own Domain Name System, web, and email server infrastructure. Our services include website development, hosting, domain names, email, graphic design, online payments, networking consultation, and search engine optimization.

We bill by the minute. If a small task takes 19 minutes, the client pays for 19 minutes—not an hour. That approach makes regular website maintenance practical. Our goal is to complete most small changes within two or three workdays.

I became involved after attending a Basic Workshop in Concord, New Hampshire, in February 1993. Since then, I have supported nonviolent conflict resolution and overseen the organization’s New Hampshire operations.

Alternatives to Violence Project NH organizes experiential workshops, primarily in the New Hampshire State Prison system. Violence also includes words intended to hurt or destroy others, which can cause more damage than physical violence.

Founder and Software Developer

I started Access-80 as a hobbyist Bulletin Board System. It originally ran on a Tandy Radio Shack TRS-80 with a Z80 microprocessor and later used Z80A and Z80B processors. These systems helped lay the groundwork for today’s online communities.
